If you have ever noticed your Honda or Acura pulling a little less power on a hot day, heat soak is probably the culprit. Heat radiates from the engine block and intake manifold into the throttle body, warming the incoming air charge and robbing you of the dense, cool air your engine craves. A thermal throttle body gasket is one of the simplest bolt-on upgrades you can make to fight back, and it costs less than a tank of premium fuel.
In this guide, we break down exactly how thermal throttle body gaskets work, which Honda and Acura applications benefit the most, and what other engine bay upgrades from P2R Power Rev Racing you should have on your radar.
A thermal throttle body gasket is a precision-cut insulating gasket that sits between the throttle body and the intake manifold. Unlike the stock paper or composite gasket, it is engineered from heat-resistant material designed to block conductive heat transfer. The result is measurably cooler intake air temperatures at the throttle body opening.
Here is what a thermal throttle body gasket does for your build:
P2R Power Rev Racing manufactures thermal throttle body gaskets for dozens of Honda and Acura applications, from the B-series Civic to the modern J-series Accord V6. Every gasket is CNC-cut for an exact OEM fit, so there is zero guesswork during installation.
Heat soak is the gradual buildup of thermal energy in your intake tract. When you drive hard, sit in traffic, or park after spirited driving, heat from the exhaust manifold, cylinder head, and engine block radiates into the intake manifold and throttle body. That heat warms the incoming air charge before it even reaches the combustion chamber.
The physics are straightforward. For every 10°F increase in intake air temperature, you lose roughly 1% of available horsepower. On a 200-horsepower Civic Si, that can mean 5–10 horsepower disappearing on a hot summer day just from heat soak alone. A thermal throttle body gasket creates an insulating barrier that keeps engine heat on the engine side and intake air on the intake side.
This is especially important for turbocharged and supercharged builds where the intercooler has already done the work of cooling the charge air. Without a thermal gasket, the last few inches of intake tract can undo some of that cooling before the air reaches the cylinders.
P2R builds thermal throttle body gaskets for a wide range of Honda and Acura platforms. Here are the most popular applications available at JSI Racing:
The K-series is one of Honda's most popular performance platforms, and it runs hot. The 06-11 Civic Si Thermal Throttle Body Gasket is one of P2R's best sellers for good reason. The K20Z3 responds well to cooler intake temps, and the gasket pairs perfectly with an aftermarket intake. The 02-04 RSX-S / 02-05 Civic Si Thermal Throttle Body Gasket covers the earlier K20A2 and K20A3 applications.
The J-series V6 runs hotter than the inline-four K-series due to its wider cylinder heads and longer intake runners. P2R specializes in the J-series platform with gaskets like the 04-08 Acura TL Thermal Throttle Body Gasket and the 09-14 Acura TL SH-AWD 3.7 Thermal Throttle Body Gasket. If you are building a J-series V6, a thermal gasket should be one of your first purchases.
Even the legendary F-series in the S2000 benefits from heat isolation. P2R offers the 00-05 S2000 Thermal Throttle Body Gasket and a 06+ S2000 Throttle Body Spacer that adds both insulation and a small plenum volume increase.
Once the thermal gasket is installed, P2R offers several more bolt-on upgrades to take your Honda or Acura engine bay to the next level.
If you are running a J-series V6 with a clean engine bay, P2R's transparent upper timing belt covers let you show off the timing belt and pulleys without sacrificing protection. Available for the 03-17 Accord V6, 04-14 TL, 03-20 MDX, and more. They are a favorite in the show car and track day crowd.
Stock rubber clutch lines expand under pressure, which creates a spongy pedal feel. P2R's full-length steel braided clutch lines eliminate that flex for a firmer, more precise clutch engagement. The 08-12 Honda Accord V6 Steel Braided Clutch Line is a direct bolt-on replacement that transforms the shifting experience on manual-transmission Accords.
For builds that need more airflow, P2R machines big bore throttle body adapters that increase the throttle body opening diameter. The 09-14 TL 3.5 Big Bore TB Adapter and the 13-17 Accord Big Bore TB Adapter allow you to pair a larger throttle body with your stock intake manifold for a noticeable improvement in top-end airflow.
J-series V6 engines are known for rear cam cap oil leaks as they age. P2R addresses this with precision-machined billet cam cap seals that replace the failure-prone OEM seals. A smart preventive upgrade on any high-mileage J-series build.
A thermal throttle body gasket works best as part of a thermal management strategy. Pair it with a cold air intake, heat-wrap your exhaust manifold or downpipe, and consider a thermal intake manifold gasket on J-series applications. P2R offers both intake manifold gaskets and throttle body gaskets so you can insulate the entire intake tract from engine heat. The combined effect is significantly greater than either upgrade alone.
